Supporting students in navigating their career journey

As the academic year reaches its climax, students find themselves juggling multiple responsibilities: studying for exams, finalising dissertations, recovering from the festive season, and often holding down part-time jobs to cover their living expenses. On top of all this, thousands of students are now facing the next big challenge: securing a summer placement or landing that first job to kick-start their career.

For many, the hurdles in this process aren’t just about the competition but also understanding how to present themselves effectively. Crafting a standout CV, showcasing their skills, and preparing for various interview formats can feel overwhelming, especially when combined with their already hectic schedules.

This is where I step in. I work with students at all levels to equip them with the tools, strategies, and confidence they need to excel in their career pursuits. My support includes:

  • Identifying strengths and character: Helping students uncover their unique qualities, values, and skills they can leverage to their advantage. This self-awareness builds a foundation for them to stand out and confidently communicate their value to employers.
  • Writing a CV that shines: Teaching students how to effectively sell their skills, achievements, and experiences to make their CV stand out from the crowd.
  • Mastering the interview process: Guiding them through preparation for telephone interviews, competency-based questions, and even technical assessments.
  • Navigating the “grey areas” of life: Often, students feel pressure to conform to rigid expectations — the “black and white” of what they think is right or wrong. I emphasise that it’s okay to be in the grey, to embrace complexity, and to master it in day-to-day situations. By exploring what it means to be true to themselves, students can build resilience and confidence to navigate life’s uncertainties.
  • Building confidence and ownership: Encouraging students to own and drive their own journey, rather than feeling pressured to meet the expectations of others, including parents. By being their authentic selves and pursuing paths aligned with their strengths and passions, they can achieve their best performance and avoid feeling lost or disconnected.
  • Company research and personal branding: Emphasising the importance of understanding the company they’re applying to and tailoring their approach to align with its values and goals.

Through practical, actionable advice and a tailored approach, I help students feel prepared and confident to take control of their futures. My goal is to ensure they shine brightly in the eyes of employers, expertly manage their many responsibilities, and forge a career path that truly resonates with who they are.
